Nintendo Switch Sports, what is it?

Sixteen years later, Wii Sports finds a successor. Nintendo Switch Sports is indeed a sports game in Motion Gaming in the vein of the Wii episode. The concept is simple: play sports while having fun. Motion Gaming allows you to participate in various sports matches as if you were there. Everything is intended to be a general public experience suitable for all uses.

What sports will be available?

If Wii Sports gave you five sports, Nintendo Switch Sports increases the offer to six. Among them, we find mainly novelties. Thus, in addition to the usual bowling and tennis, players can try out football, volleyball, badminton and chambara (reminiscent of Wii Sports Resort’s sword fight). Each sport uses different Motion Gaming mechanics, more or less advanced, in order to provide a rich gameplay experience.

If you can mimic your throws or racquet blows using the Joy-Con, like the Wiimote in its day, Nintendo Switch Sports also offers to record the movement of your legs. To do this, a leg strap (or the Leg strap) comes with the game. Ring Fit Adventure players will not be out of place since this accessory was already part of the armada necessary for the proper functioning of the game.

As you might expect, this strap is useful for football. By sticking your Joy-Con there, the console will be able to detect the movements of your leg. Note that this feature is for penalty shootouts only, the matches being played by hand. As for the other sports offered in the game, they do not use them.

A sport, a way of playing?

Nintendo promises us a rich enough content for its game. The six sports are divided into several variants that enrich the experience. Bowling, for example, a great Wii Sports classic, offers alternative tracks with various obstacles. The chambara plays on the diversity of weapons (sword, charging sword, double sword…). As for football, you can opt for 4vs4 or 1vs1 matches. The penalty shootout mode allows you to use the leg strap to score your best goals.

Does Nintendo Switch Sports offer local multiplayer content?

Like its predecessor, Nintendo Switch Sports allows you to do multi-sport sports simulation. Nothing surprising in this since it is above all a title intended to be played with friends or family. Local multiplayer can bring together up to four players in the same room. However, note that some sports, due to their duel aspect, only allow two players to compete. This is the case of chambara and badminton.

What about online multiplayer?

Nintendo Switch Sports seems to be betting big on the online part. If it will be possible to face players from all over the world through the classic modes of the different sports, small dedicated variants will also be in the game. We know that bowling will offer players the opportunity to take part in frenzied competitions with 16 participants, but also with a battle royale between 60 competitors.

Note that playing online will also allow you to climb the ranks of the pro league. This ranked mode will invite you to surpass yourself in order to increase your rank (from E to A) in the different disciplines. Apart from your personal satisfaction, this will earn you a number of trophies and rewards. These will be used in particular to personalize your avatar.

Can we find the Miis in Nintendo Switch Sports?

Nintendo Switch title ditches Miis in favor of more styled avatars chibi and current. You can customize these, both in terms of the face and the outfit worn. But if you miss the Miis, don’t panic. The most nostalgic can indeed choose to find their avatar of yesteryear and thus abandon Nintendo’s new proposal.

What do we know about post-launch content?

Nintendo has already announced that the game will receive various free updates after its release. The first will concern football. The latter should thus combine the strength of the Joy-Con and the leg strap in order to offer more complete matches, being played both by hand and by foot. The update is expected to arrive sometime in the summer of 2022.

In autumn, we will celebrate the arrival of a new sport, well known to Wii Sports players: Golf. Over time, Nintendo will therefore enrich its offer and offer us even more sports to try. According to data miners, next on the list would be basketball and dodgeball. But this last information is not official and should therefore be taken with a grain of salt.
