Game news Zelda: Is the sequel to Breath of The Wild running on the current Nintendo Switch? Analysts doubt it

On March 29, Nintendo, which had not given any news of the Breath of the Wild sequel since June 2021, formalized the postponement of the game to spring 2023. A postponement that did not surprise many people, the title having so far only had a vague 2022 as a release date.

A postponement, but new images that feed theories

It is Eiji Aonumathe executive producer of The Legend of Zelda license, which himself announced the postponement of the game on social networks and the usual distribution channels. While apologizing to the players who were waiting for the title this year, he explained that the teams had made the decision to extend development time to provide a relevant and meaningful experience. To illustrate the announcement, the video showed images of the game, some of which are unpublished. The opportunity for fans and observers to dissect each plan in order to deduce new things, which are added to the study of the first two trailers.

From these new images stands out in particular the artifact that equips Link’s right arm. Golden light emanates from the artifact’s gauntlet, which then rises around a corrupted or strangely tattooed arm. An artefact that undoubtedly evokes the one seen in the very first trailer of the game, and which is accompanied by a Master Sword that also seems affected. It appears gnawed, which obviously does not prevent it from being extremely useful.

The most recent images make technical analysts doubt

In addition, many people had the impression, as during the second trailer released last summer, that it was still visually very ambitious for the Switch. In the line of sight, the appearance of the clouds and the idea of a whole celestial world to be integrated above the initial playing area. The Switch having already had several versions, being “in the middle of its existence” according to Nintendo, and many rumors evoking the possible arrival of an improved and more powerful version, we are entitled to ask ourselves the question: Does this Breath of the Wild sequel really run on the Nintendo Switch family currently on sale?

There is no doubt that in view of the installed base, the final version will run on current consoles, but the rendering presented also made the journalists of Digital Foundry doubt, who analyzed the recent images. For John Linneman, it would be surprising that the game as presented runs on the current Switchs. Talking about volumetric effects and anti-aliasing, he said:

This trailer was interesting because the picture quality looked pretty good I think. I was a little surprised by how sharp and clear this one was compared to the original in general. It could be the next Switch, or it could just be a trailer at a higher render, resolution, and settings.

Thus, for the journalist of DigitalFoundrywriting attached to Eurogamer and renowned for the quality of its technical analysis, two options are available to us: either Nintendo is preparing an improved Switch with Zelda as a figurehead, either the trailer does not reflect the visual quality of the game. There have been many misleading visual rendering trailers throughout history, but Nintendo is clearly not one of the bad studentseven if it means cooling the ardor of fans by revealing videos highlighting the technical limits of the console.
